BIOGRAPHY

Walther K. Lang
Walther K. Lang (b. 1957) was born in the Lucerne area of Switzerland. After training as a primary school teacher, he spent several years focusing on music studies. In Lucerne, he studied trombone and wind band conducting, later expanding his knowledge at the Swiss Jazz School in Bern.
During this period, he performed in a wide range of ensembles, including wind ensembles, jazz combos, wind and symphony orchestras, and big bands. He also taught trombone and conducted wind orchestras. A study abroad experience at Berklee College of Music (Boston, USA) in 1982 had a profound impact on him.
After relocating to Basel in 1991, he worked as a senior high school music teacher in the Basel area — his main occupation for approximately 30 years. During these "family years" (he has three now-adult children), he devoted much of his energy to private study: listening to and analyzing music, and studying theory books.
Since 2022, he has been composing music for jazz orchestra. He spent a year studying jazz composition and arranging with Ed Partyka at the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts (HSLU), as part of a Certificate of Advanced Studies (CAS) program. He has since created more than 60 charts.
